ChatGPT ranking factors: how to get cited by ChatGPT

ChatGPT decides which brands to name using two things: what it learned in training, and what it retrieves live when it browses. To be cited, you need to be present and extractable in the sources it pulls from, and described consistently enough across the web that the model already knows you.

How ChatGPT chooses what to cite

ChatGPT answers from its training data by default and browses the live web (via its search index) when a question needs current information, citing sources when it does. That means two paths to visibility: being consistently described across the web so the model knows your brand, and being retrievable and extractable when it browses.

ChatGPT ranking factors

1. Be in the index it browses

When ChatGPT searches, it pulls from a web index. If your pages are not crawlable and indexable, you cannot be retrieved. Solid technical SEO is the entry ticket.

2. Answer-first, extractable pages

Pages that state the answer in the first sentences, one question each, with clean structured data, are far easier for ChatGPT to quote and attribute than pages that bury the point.

3. Third-party corroboration

ChatGPT leans heavily on Reddit, review sites, listicles, and forums. An accurate mention in a source it trusts often matters more than anything on your own domain.

4. Consistent brand facts

Contradictory names, offers, or details make a brand hard to attribute. Consistency across your site, listings, and profiles feeds both live retrieval and future training runs.

5. Open access for its crawlers

Allow GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt if you want to be eligible for citation, and add an llms.txt summary of who you are.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use live web search or training data?

Both. ChatGPT answers from training data by default and runs live web searches when a question needs current information, citing sources when it browses. Training data determines whether it already knows your brand; live retrieval determines whether you get cited with a link now.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There is no way to pay OpenAI to be recommended inside organic ChatGPT answers. Citations are earned through retrievability, third-party corroboration, and consistency.
